Self-Organization of Turbulence

چکیده

Theoretical treatments of turbulence in fluids and plasmas often assume that the turbulence is isotropic and homogeneous. It is also often considered that turbulence produces uniformly distributed chaos, even when starting with a coherent initial con dition. Recently, however, phenomena which do not obey these classic concepts have emerged. For example, in two-dimen sional Navier-Stokes turbulence, an organi zed flow or structure is found to appear even from a chaotic initial condition. This manuscript attempts to review some of the recent developments of a phenomenon called self-organization in the field of hydrodynamics and plasma physics.

Interstellar Turbulence and Star Formation

We provide a brief overview of recent advances and outstanding issues in simulations of interstellar turbulence, including isothermal models for interior structure of molecular clouds and larger-scale multiphase models designed to simulate the formation of molecular clouds. We show how self-organization in highly compressible magnetized turbulence in the multiphase ISM can be exploited in simpl...

Optical soliton in dielectric fibers and self-organization of turbulence in plasmas in magnetic fields

One important discovery in the twentieth century physics is the natural formation of a coherent or a well-ordered structure in continuous media, in contrary to degradation of the state as predicted earlier from the second law of thermodynamics. Here nonlinearity plays the essential role in its process. The discovery of soliton, a localized stable wave in a nonlinear and dispersive medium and th...

Self-organization, Pattern Formation, Cavity Solitons and Rogue Waves in Singly Resonant Optical Parametric Oscillators

Spatio-temporal dynamics of singly resonant optical parametric oscillators with external seeding displays hexagonal, roll and honeycomb patterns, optical turbulence, rogue waves and cavity solitons. We derive appropriate mean-field equations with a sinc nonlinearity and demonstrate that offresonance seeding is necessary and responsible for the formation of complex spatial structures via selforg...

Self-organization in Navier-Stokes turbulence

Fluid turbulence is undoubtedly a complex phenomenon, but the relation between the fundamental laws and the emergence of large-scale coherent eddies from differential interactions in a random background has remained elusive. Such a connection is attempted in this paper. The key analytical step is to express the Navier-Stokes equations in the Hermitian wavelet representation, which adds one inde...
